We understand that every behaviour serves a purpose and while challenging behaviours are seen as difficult situations, the proper environment and treatment can reduce, and eventually stop, such practices. We train our staff to engage as per The Positive Behaviour Support Plan when supporting a participant to address their needs without taking away their freedom of choice and independence.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centered therapy approach that involves working closely with the person with a disability and their support, to understand what triggers their challenging behaviours, so that the best strategies can be provided to reduce and/or eliminate those behaviours and any associated restrictive practices.
The plan is aimed at making difficult behaviour unnecessary by removing the things that trigger, encourage or reward that behaviour. It will also teach you alternative and more appropriate behaviour to replace the difficult behaviour.
Our approach to supporting a person with challenging behaviours are
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans and assessments focus on increasing a person’s quality of life including improving their skills and enhancing their independence. We believe in the approach of improving skills, emotion regulation and introducing replacement behaviours to decrease the challenging behaviours. Getting to know and understanding our client’s environment and circumstances are the key to identifying the causes of challenging behaviour. This is combined with strategies to teach clients new skills and methods to cope with triggers and manage their behaviour.
The plan is aimed at making difficult behaviour unnecessary by removing the things that trigger, encourage or reward that behaviour. It will also teach you alternative and more appropriate behaviour to replace the difficult behaviour.
We ensure our support workers are regularly trained and updated in behaviour support strategies which includes training such as CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention).
We aim to improve quality of life through personalised care and strategies that are responsive to the person’s need, reduce the occurrence and impact of behaviours of concern, and safeguard the rights, dignity and quality of life of our clients.
